A weldless bulkhead is used to provide a liquid-tight port into your brewing vessels. While our standard bulkhead is suited for wall thicknesses up to 1/8", the variable length bulkhead here can accommodate wall thicknesses of UP TO 1.5" thick because the threaded nipple is straight thread rather than taper (NPT). The locknuts can travel the entire length for ultimate flexibility. This bulkhead is especially well suited for coolers because it allows you to extend the ball valve away from the cooler wall enough to let the handle clear the body of the cooler.
Our bulkheads use thick flat silicone washers instead of orings. They are more expensive but are a much less likely to slip out from under the locknut. They are also capable of covering oversized holes.
Install Requirements:
Drill a clean 13/16" or 7/8" diameter hole in your pot taking care to avoid any wall contours that may prevent the silicone gasket from sitting flat on the inside wall of the vessel. If you are installing into a cooler that already has a drain, that hole can be used as long as it's 7/8" or less diameter.
Wrap several turns of teflon tape on the threads where the interior locknut will sit (there should be enough tape such that the nut doesn't spin easily over it), spin that internal locknut into its final position and make sure the gasket is sitting flat against it. Insert through the hole from the inside, push the metal washer on and thread the external locknut down to tighten. No teflon tape or gasket is require, nor recommended, on the outside because if the interior seal is leaking, you WANT it to leak on the outside to show you that.
Now thread any 1/2" NPT female accessories on to either interior or exterior sides of the bulkhead (with teflon tape).
The first option is standard model: VB2 and is shown on the right. You get exactly what is pictured (1/2" x 2.5" NPS nipple, SS washer, Silicone Gasket, and 2 Lock Nuts
Some configuration ideas:
If you plan to batch sparge, a 1/2" female hose barb threaded on to the interior will allow you to clamp on a smaller stainless braid.
If you plan to batch sparge and want to use a larger stainless braid, like one meant for a water heater connection, that braid will slip directly over the threads of this bulkhead (use a hose clamp).
Our stainless tubular screen "AKA Bazooka Screen" will also clamp right over the threads once you remove the stock nipple that is included.
If you want to attach a DIY CPVC manifold to this, you'll simply need a CPVC 1/2" NPT female adapter.
