Description

While CDN's DTQ450Q handheld digital is our absolute favorite thermometer for spot checking everything during brew day, this DTTC model is a close second and adds a LOT of extra features.

First, let's get this out of the way immediately. As a thermometer it is relatively accurate at +/- 2F but if you're looking for tighter accuracy you should look at the handheld DTQ450 instead. This unit is a little slower and a little less accurate but comes with several other value added features that are great for heating up your water or chilling down your wort. It comes with a long stainless probe on a cord so that the controls/display can be in a more convenient location. It also features a clock, timer, and our favorite feature; high and low temperature alarms. Why are temperature alarms a great feature" If you use it on your hot liquor tank or for heating your steeping water, you can walk away while heating and the alarm tells you when you've hit your target temp. How about during chilling your boiled wort" Set the low temp alarm for your desired pitching temp and it will tell you when the chilling is done.

DTTC THERMOMETER Features

Thermometer Range: 14 to 392°F/-10 to +200°C;
Timer: 24 hours by hr/min
5.5" (14.0 cm) probe/3' (91.4 cm) sensor cable (heat resistant up to 600°F/316°C)
VERY IMPORTANT: The stainless braided wire on the remote probe is NOT waterproof. You cannot submerge the probe deep into your liquids such that the cord gets wet or it will foul up the temperature reading. It's best to use this probe with one of our PCOMP fittings to install the stainless probe into the vessel sidewall.
Upper & lower temp alarm (user settable)
Dual progress display
Counts up & down with stop/restart
Big digit
Last count recall
Stainless steel probe
Sliding mode switch
International time
2-way mounting: magnet/stand
Adjustable stainless steel clip
1.5V AAA Alkaline (included)

Having brewed with a generous handful of cheap digital thermometers, we've learned to be very skeptical of performance claims of the manufacturers. Whenever the topic of "the best digital thermometer" comes up on the forums, the answer is always the "thermapen". It is a very nice thermometer for $94, but most people find it to be a luxury item. It's also not waterproof so you'll turn it into an expensive paperweight if you drop it into your boil kettle. Since the thermapen is so respected, we bought one to compare at least 10 competing budget options. Most of them were so bad, that we wrote them off immediately. The CDN units compared VERY favorably and we think you'll agree when you see the data points below.

Accuracy and responsiveness are middle of the road but works fine for monitoring whirlpool temp during chilling.

3 of 5 Nice design, good features, but intermittent probe January 29, 2016
Reviewer: John Esker from Silver Spring, MD United States
Great product but seemed to have received one with a faulty probe.  Worked less than 5 minutes.  Good thing it has a 5 yr warranty.  Will just send back to manufacturer for easy replacement.
