Description

A weldless bulkhead is used to provide a liquid-tight port into your brewing vessels. This is an alternative to having a coupling or spud welded or soldered in.

Our new line of "True Bulkheads" was completely designed from scratch. The entire homebrew industry is flooded with makeshift bulkhead designs that are only a small step up from the DIY parts you'd find at a hardware store. While we were confident in the performance of our previous bulkheads made from off the shelf parts, the new True Bulkheads solve several shortcomings and look sharp in the process.

All varieties of True Bulkheads:
  1. Use a huge hex size with a machined O-Ring containment groove (gland). When used with an oring, you can tighten the bulkhead with gorilla strength for stability and the gasket will not budge or get damaged.
  2. Are machined from a single piece of 304SS hex bar stock for less places for crud to hide.
  3. Rely on an exterior locknut to make the gasket squeeze. No more trial and error with various shim washer thicknesses and playing teflon tape Olympics.
  4. Accommodate vessel wall thicknesses up to 3/8" or 8mm thick while still leaving enough male thread for a ball valve or any other female threaded fitting.
  5. 1/2" NPT threads on the outside of the kettle.
The theme here is that these bulkheads are in a different league and we think the pricing is unbelievably reasonable for what you get.

For this model; TrueBulkheadBore, the end that sits inside the vessel has no attachment threads, barbs or any of that. It is just a 1/2" hole bored through the hex to the exit of the bulkhead. The intended usage of this bulkhead is for a simple drain bulkhead where no accessories are needed internally and where the lowest profile install is desired.

This would also be a great option if you wanted to silver solder 1/2" OD tubing in to the bulkhead for a robust HERMS coil install or any other accessory that doesn't need to be regularly removed from the bulkhead. In other words, it would be an alternative to using the True Bulkhead with Compression fitting if you don't mind doing a little silver soldering. Note that the bore is a hair under 1/2" so you will have to drill out to 1/2" for this use.

Hole Side Options: If your hole is closer to 13/16" the standard oring seals great. If your hole is a bit over-sized, right around 7/8", we can include an additional thin oring that will keep the fitting centered in the hole while you tighten it up. If you have no way of accurately measuring your hole, the threads of a 1/2" male NPT fitting will be snug in a 13/16" hole and wiggle side to side a bit in a 7/8" hole. When in doubt, select 7/8". You can remove the extra oring and try it but you'll have it in case you need it.

Install Notes:
  • Drill a clean 13/16" diameter hole in your pot taking care to avoid any wall contours that may prevent the interior hex from sitting flat on the inside wall of the vessel. It is also important to remove any sharp edges or "burrs" from the inside edge of the hole, otherwise the oring can get torn. Insert the threaded portion of the unit through the hole from the inside of your pot or keg with only the oring in place. On the outside, install the metal washer and locknut and snug everything up with a pair of wrenches. Hint, it's best to hold the interior hex so that one of its points is facing up. It's better to hold the interior fitting still and tighten the exterior nut to protect the gasket/oring.

5 of 5 Excellent Upgrade August 12, 2021

I've swapped every fitting on my kettle to use these bulkheads and am so pleased with the design. Easy to install and so much more secure than the stock ones with constantly breaking exposed gaskets.

5 of 5 Great Product - Keggle Drain May 18, 2020
Reviewer: Kyle B. from PA
Installed this at the bottom of my keggle [along with a ball valve & pipe nipple] to CIP after a brew day. Just let everything run into a bucket below the keggle and dump in the sink.  I just use a towel to wipe the cup of water at the bottom that can't drain [due to lip on the bulkhead]. Great product, leak free first time.

5 of 5 Great piece December 21, 2017

I used this for a bottom draining keggle mash tun. Worked great. Another great, creative solution from Bobby M that is not quite like all the other choices out there. The custom machining on some of the parts and pieces, and the thought put into those changes, are what have me returning to Bobby's site over and over again.
