Schwarzbiers are deceiving. They look like a stout but if you close your eyes, you may be fooled into thinking you're drinking a Pilsner or Kolsch. The beer finishes dry yet slightly malty in the balance. While it looks dark and bold, the roast level is very subdued and certainly not astringent. You can read more about the official style here.
Expect about a 4.8% ABV, black opaque color with a touch of ruby in bright lights, creamy head, dry finish, with just enough bitterness to balance. The hop flavor and aromas are moderately low with a floral character.
Requires a 16 quart boil kettle minimum. The instructions are quite simple for this beer. Making it style accurate requires fermenting in the mid 50F area, but you'll still get a passable beer at room temp if you have to.
Included with the kit, malt extracts, steeping grains (if applicable), steeping bag, hops, yeast, priming sugar, 50 bottle caps. Not included: Bottles, 6 gallons of RO or Distilled water.
Makes 5 gallons of finished, packaged beer.
Like all of our custom designed recipe kits, the ingredients are taken directly out of our high turnover stock at the time of ordering. That way, nothing sits in a box on the shelf.
A brew-day checklist and basic instructions directly out of beersmith software is provided.
