This grommet is sized for a 9/16" Hole in a surface approximately 1/16" thick. When set into a 9/16" hole, the inside hole measures just under 5/16". We use this to put our TW18 thermowell into the lid of a bucket or fermonster and it grips the thermowell plenty to keep it from sliding. If you make the hole slightly smaller, such as 1/2", the thermowell will be gripped very tightly. Your choice.
