Any single vessel system with a sizable deadspace below or to the sides of a basket will greatly benefit from constant stirring of that area during the mash for a few reasons:

Specifically in electric heated systems, the heat source is a relatively small area that heats up quickly while the temperature probe is sufficiently far away that it never quite senses the average temp of the entire dead space if it is allowed to sit still.
The recirculation flow over the top of the mash must be carefully throttled to avoid over-pumping faster than the mash/basket/bag can flow. If not, you can fully expose the element to air and cause a scorching dry fire. That flow rate is approximately 1.5 liters per minute but it is quite difficult to accurately set a valve to deliver that slow flow with a typical powerful brewing pump.

Our solution to these situations is to split the output of the pump to deliver the flow to both a whirlpool port as well as the upper recirculation port. Both of those flows can be fully open, fully closed or any mix you wish. Our recommendation during the mash is to open the whirlpool valve fully and then throttle the recirculation valve to deliver about 1.5 liters per minute to the recirculation. Allowing a majority of the pump's flow to bypass to the whirlpool makes it very easy to fine tune the recirculation flow as the pressure is greatly diminished.

This specific kit is designed for Clawhammer brand systems that use 1/2" NPT ports. The Clawhammer has one welded port in the front for a drain. Nothing changes about that port. The other welded port ships with a thread-in thermowell that you slide the controller probe into. Our kit moves the probe to another fresh location so that the welded port can be used for the whirlpool return.

First, we include our PCOMP4 weldless probe compression fitting. You drill a 9/16" hole and install the fitting with the compression end INSIDE the kettle so the controller probe extends into the kettle about 2" and the bare probe is exposed to the liquid for much improved accuracy and speed.

Next, we include the Spincycle Shorty that you'll thread into the interior whirlpool port with the outlet slightly tipped upwards so the deadspace around the basket is well stirred and brought back down to be reheated.

(1) 1/2" NPT TEE
2) 1/2" Mini Ball Valves
(2) 1/2" Male NPT x Male QD
(1) 3ft length of silicone tubing
(2) Female QD x 1/2" barb fittings (crimp clamped into the tubing above)
