I never planned to stick with the hobby long enough to brew every BJCP style and that was never a conscious goal. It just got to the point where I had brewed almost everything but American Stout was an outlier that I hadn't been exposed to due to low commercial availability. I was aware of Sierra Nevada Stout, but I never saw it in the bottle shops. In 2021, I just happened to brew one by amalgamating a few recipes I found and I really enjoyed the beer and regretted ignoring the style for so long. That first beer earned me a gold medal with a score of 48 out of 50 at the 2021 Motown Mash competition. I made it a recipe kit right away and several customers and employees began medaling with it right away. Please be my guest and discover what a great beer American Stout can be.

American stout is a rather bold and roasty beer with an equally firm hop bitterness. It has more drinkability than an imperial stout and less hop character than a Black IPA. The finish is moderately dry and bitter but without excessive astringency.

This beer will do well with either White Labs WLP001 or Omega OYL-004 built up in a 1 liter starter (or two packs if you don't want to use a starter) or two packs of US-05 dry yeast (select these as accessories in the accessory list). If you plan to bottle condition, be sure you have 4-5 ounces of priming sugar. You can purchase that as an accessory as well.
